MSA Volunteer David Nebel...

David Nebel

David Nebel was recently recognized for his volunteer efforts with the MSA hydrotherapy program at the Bellevue Aquatic Center by receiving the Volunteer of the Year award from the Washington State Therapeutic Recreation Association.

“He really deserves it because he’s our star,” praises hydrotherapy instructor, Stacy Smith, a Certified Recreation Therapist who has been with the program for two years. “We really need him and he’s a help to all of us.”

David has offered his time to the MSA at the Bellevue Aquatic Center for over six years now. He was originally referred to the program by his wife, who noticed an ad in the newspaper looking for MSA volunteers.

“She thought it was the perfect fit,” notes Nebel, who says that he “loves the water” and swims five times a week at the Mountlake Terrace Recreation Center.

“I was able to retire from fulltime work years ago and my wife wanted to find something that would get me out of the house!” he laughs.

Until recently, David also volunteered for the Terrace View Presbyterian Church’s Concern for Neighbors Food Bank in Mountlake Terrace as well.

He says that at such times as Christmas, this was like a full-time job.

During the class he works directly with one individual who has balance issues and who needs help getting in and out of the water.

Together they move about the pool, with the woman also utilizing one of the “noodles” for balance and letting David know when she’s tired and needs to rest by the side of the pool.

“Harriet and Stacy appreciate having the extra pair of hands for the class and that I’m dependable and responsible when I’m there.” David notes.

“The participants are also appreciative and friendly. My greatest satisfaction is seeing people increase their mobility and flexibility and the following week note that they ‘feel better’ due to the class,” he says. David adds that he gets more out of volunteering than he puts in and encourages anyone on the fence about volunteering to just plunge in and do it.
