There is a hole in our Community Safety Net…and some of those least able to care for themselves are being affected…our disabled! In late June, just prior to the start of our new fiscal year, United Way of King County advised us that the funding for our next two-year cycle would be short by a substantial margin. They decided NOT to continue to fund Case Management, which includes our Information & Referral program. In the last fiscal year we handled over 2800 requests for information and referral. In fiscal year 06/07 United Way distributed $77,793 to the MSA. Funding for our new fiscal year (starting 7/1/07) was reduced to $44,355. This is a shortage of $33,438 for 07/08 that must be made up this year. Next year total funding will be reduced to $34,512. United Way has no appeal process in place for these decisions. Limited funding for Ariel House and our Rehabilitation programs will continue through this next two-year cycle. Pressed with a concern to be more impactful and make real lasting change, national issues such as homelessness and disaster preparedness are now the UWKC priorities, rather than local issues impacting your neighbors and friends. We have since been contacted by other agencies for the disabled and learned that their funding has been similarly reduced. How do we make up this money? We hope to raise an additional $10,000 in special events, $10,000 in grants and $7,500 in unrestricted contributions. We accept all forms of contribution including securities and credit cards (AMEX, MasterCard and VISA). The balance of the shortfall will come mostly from expense reductions. Currently $.83 of each dollar donated goes directly to MS programs and services. Supporters should know they can designate part or all of their workplace giving to the MS Association of King County. Any extra gift towards this deficit would be most appreciated by MSA and our clients. Thank you for your continued support!
