Acupuncture

Excerpt from "How Does Acupuncture Work" by Jane Tian

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This is done by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points. The classical Chinese explanation of acupuncture is that channels of energy run in regular patterns, called meridians, through the body and over its surface. An obstruction in the movement of energy through these meridians is like a dam that backs up the flow in one part of the body and restricts it in others. Any obstruction or blockage of energy would eventually lead to disease. These meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points: the acupuncture needles unblock the obstruction at the dams and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Modern science explains acupuncture in two ways. Needling acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals either change the experiencing of pain, or they trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.

The second explanation involves movement of electrons within the body's cells. These electrons within the body are called "bioelectrons". Energy flow in the meridians is the direct or indirect transportation of bioelectrons. Meridians are the pathways where bioelectrons move more frequently than other parts of the body. When positive and negative charges in the bioelectronic movements are not balanced, the cells act abnormally. In Chinese medicine, this is known as Yin/Yang imbalance and is defined as "disease". Only a radical change of the cells' electrons movement is admitted by western medicine as "disease".

Both external factors (such as mechanical, physical, chemical and biological), and internal factors (such as mental, hereditary and constitutional), can cause the body's bioelectrical movement to become imbalanced, leading to disease. Acupuncture forces bioelectrons to resume their normal patterns (Yin/Yang balance). The longer the term of treatment, the more consistently the normal patterns of the bioelectrons remain, until the abnormal pattern is eradicated. At this point the problem is deemed as completely treated.
